with the hard top. I've yet to take the entire top off, but with the T tops off it's plenty open for me. Of course you can strip it down to dune buggy mode and get as much open air as you like. I have an '11 with the old engine/auto trans, which I like just fine. I'm getting better mileage around town than I was getting with my Outback H6 (19/20) and can get 22/23 on the highway if I watch my speed. I've not driven the '12 but everything I'm hearing on the Jeep forums has been good. But it's the unexpected things I really enjoy. On the highway it's just plain serene. The engine lopes along at 1800 at 70, it's incredibly quiet and rides/handles surprisingly nice (much better than the Subaru). I really like being up above the spray and the fray. The square roof really keeps the sun off you in hot weather, it's like riding around in a tall, shady tree house. I find it a totally relaxing car to drive in the urban cut and thrust, no small thing. After years (since 1969) of driving a wide range of relatively small, low European cars, I find myself getting a silly grin every time I drive this thing--it's just plain charming. At the moment it's my only car and it's does EVERYTHING well (I wanted a convertible and a wagon--got it). The only down side is it's just impossible to buy them used--even five year old ones bring within a few grand of what new ones go for. The new engine/trans is well worth going for.
