years. I'm experienced but in no way do I consider myself an expert. Some of what I have learned has been said here already:
Don't chase a hot track record
Mutual Funds are IMHO a suckers bet. Most of them underperform and charge you both visible and hidden fees.
We are closing in on the second lost decade where if you bought the S&P 10 years ago you still haven't made any real money.
There is no one right way to do this. A lot has to do with what your goals and expectations are, your risk tolerance and how much control over the investments do you want to exert.
With the advent of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) you can take a position in just about any strategy you can think of in an cost effective way.
I have been an investor in many good solid companies but also don't marry them or become a collector. For every Apple there are many more Kodaks.
Take personal responsibility for your savings. A good rule of thumb is your age should represent your % of fixed income and the balance in more aggressive (equity) investments. Be a contrarian and stay out of the crowd.
You don't have to obsess over your portfolio, keep an eye on it, and when any of the reasons you bought the company have changed sell it.
Selling is an art, any fool can buy something but knowing when to sell is the lesson each investor has to learn to be successful. No one is perfect in any endeavor, why should you think you won't make mistakes investing. I wish there was some clever piece of advice I could give but in the end just research and use common sense. Remember the Stock Market is one giant discounting mechanism. Almost all of the information is discounted in the present price of a stock. Pay attention to what the Insiders(Corporate officers) are doing. It's public information whether they are buying or selling their own stock. If they're selling, especially aggressively, you may want to pay attention to that.
I have gone on too long already. I hope there is something in my rant that is helpful. It's probably worth what your paying for it :)
