Tend to agree. Muller saw an opportunity and went for it. There was never a guarantee it was going to work out, and I'd say given the folks who expressed interest in buying Saab and then backed out probably did so because they saw a very difficult future. Muller is a reasonably sharp guy, he probably saw those issues too but charged ahead and did the best he could.
Had Muller not ignored his better sense and the warning signs everywhere Saab would have ended in 2009 with Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn, etc. They would have liquidated the assets, cut off the dealers, and called it a day. "We" got almost two extra years out of Saab because Muller gave it his all. He could have done things differently, taken fewer or more risks, who knows? All we can probably say is that nobody likes to fail and trust that Muller had no more intention of doing so that we wanted him to. In the end, though, Muller is the guy that stepped up to try. Not a single other living soul.
Saab didn't work out for a HUGE number of glaringly obvious reasons, not the least of which is that virtually nobody bought a new Saab in 2010 or 2011. I didn't. I mean, where is the NG9-5 board right here on Saabnet? It doesn't exist because only 12 people own those cars! Had Muller's predictions/hopes worked out, 10,000 people would have showed up to sign and even if the numbers weren't working out, he could point to sales to garner more valuable investment. All he had to trade on in the last few months was smooth talking and convincing dreams. That's a tough sell in any time, but especially so in this economy.
