I can remember selling new Hondas in the '80's. The sedan Accords were a 60 day wait to pay list price plus while the two door hatchbacks were always in stock and hard to move. Generally the prevailing wisdom was that hatchbacks were for economy cars. Being as GM is usually a follower rather than a leader I'm sure they took one look at Saab and said "we know what's wrong with Saab, they have hatchbacks, they're 4 cylinders." And so they continued to try and push 6 cylinders (and were probably perplexed as to why more people bought the 4 cylinders)and got rid of the hatchbacks--all to "fix" Saab. The really galling thing is that NOW GM finally gets it-the top of the line Buicks are all 4 cylinder turbos. Apparently a lot of other manufacturers "get it" too, they're all coming up with turbo (or I should say Eco) 4 cylinder engines. All I can say is that if GM starts putting hatchbacks on their cars I'm going to go burn down the their headquarters (well not really).
