VM + JAJ's failing was not ensuring sufficient available capital to fund the 3 years including adequate contingency for missing sales targets in those first 3 years. VM was assuming Antonov would be cleared + would be able to provide that contingency funding, but that was a whole murky mess that should not have been relied on. JAJ "retired" fully knowing that this was a likely scenario. The CEO's #1 job is to ensure adequate capitalization for the plan... not paying suppliers is an obvious huge business 101 mistake!
There were lots of people interested in SAAB. Partnering up sooner with well funded parties might have averted this current mess.
I do admire both of them - VM's "tenacity" and JAJ's level headedness... but SAAB was a startup, and it needed to be run more like a high tech startup from the day signatures hit paper... imho... (and of course easy to say from the outside!)
