Public roads, bridges and airports are all very profitable for the lucky few receiving exclusive government contracts to build and operate them. If not for the over-charging by those lucky few, all the toll roads, bridges and airports would be highly profitable. That profit would naturally attract competition, just like the rapid build-out of the internet infrastructure . . . and the rapid build-out of the original turn-pikes a century and half earlier, before late-19th century and early 20th century Leviathan "gun-run" (gov't) monopolized infrastructure building.
Toyota was by far the primary funding source for Prius. If Japanese "gun-run" had been the primary funder, you'd be seeing Honda Prius, Nissan Prius, Mazda Prius, Subaru Prius, etc. If you want to check the "investment" record of Japanese "gun-run," they were the primary funding source for the early 1990's "super computer," when everyone and their dog knew that the Japanese were about to take over the world with their ever so wise "gun-run" bureaucratic planners. Apparently, the wise men at the Japanese ministry of industry and technology missed the internet revolution and biotech revolution altogether, whille squandering Japanese brains on researching dead-end mainframe super computers that were easily eclipsed by Intel desktops a few years later.
