Let me try this one more time and see if I can get through before the knee starts jerking--I specifically said I DON'T believe you can make a case based on cost for any of the hybrids, electrics and even the diesels (unless you drive an inordinate number of miles)with gas at or below $4 per gallon. If on the other hand if gas goes up significantly, if we get into a war with Iran as an example, than the dynamics will change. At the time it came out the Volt was the only PLUG IN hybrid on the market, which is it's main virtue over a Prius. It is a very different system than a Prius (it always runs on electric and the gas engine is a generator only)which may account for the price difference--or not. If Toyota's plug in is functionally equal for less then that will move the technology forward, they'll dominate the market and more power to them. The Volt isn't the end all and be all (my guess is hydrogen will be the thing)but with rising gas prices, cost cutting and improvements, could be a viable player. At the very least it did move the discussion forward.
