All "investments" and planning for the future are speculative by nature. The difference between diverse planning by individuals and private self-reliant corporations vs. central planning by government is the difference between voluntary vs. coercion. It's the same as the difference between six(e) vs. raipe(remove-i). It is the voluntary participation that makes speculative investment equitable, even failed ones, and in the long run giving rise to more and more efficient new solutions to human desires. Coercive central planning "investment" OTOH leads to adverse selection, like all those white elephants in centrally planned economies (and subsequent massive disturbance and violence due to the pie shrinking).
I certainly agree with you on the electric rear-axle. I had been advocating that since the mid-1990's. I'm not sure what to make of the news that American-Axle is buying out the joint-venture.
