Why aren't you paying for it out of your own pocket? even at the subsidized $40k price?
An apple or an orange might be nutricious, but at $10 apiece, both would be poor choice. You can contrive all sorts of hyperinflationary scenario or that just might be the last apple or orange in the world fantasy, but the reality is that you'd be a fool to pay $10 for a single apple or orange now.
At the current $4/gallon gasoline price, a case for properly priced hybrids like the Prius can be easily made for high mileage drivers and taxi fleet. The case for diesel is made every day by long-haul truck drivers, as does the case for electric by indoor forklift users. There is even a case for plug-in hybrids with limited battery-only range, like for tight parking environment being able to move the car without starting the ICE. The economic case for a Volt with massive expensive battery pack simply doesn't exist. With currently available technology, its electric range of 35 miles is made possible by the hugely expensive and very heavy Lithium-Ion battery pack, which both affects price and fuel economy beyond 35miles on the same day. At 35miles a day, oil price would have to be some $400/bbl in order to make up for the $20-25k price premium that Volt carries over a comparable conventional Chevy 5door like the Malibu Maxx. That's just silly. Numerous alternative solutions would long be in action before oil stabilizes around $400/bbl: Fischer-Troppish synthetic gasoline production becomes viable at around $80-100/bbl; cars and electricity generation plant switching from liquid fuel to natural gas would be far more cost-effective in arbitraging the price difference between oil vs. natural gas (electricity generation). This arbitrage is essentially what "plug-in" hybrid does after paying for the expensive and heavy battery pack.
