Last year replaced our 15 year old Maytag top loader. It was leaking around tub seal, two separate repair people said that problem was often not worth repairing as rust around the tub would mean the new seal would be short lived.
After lots of shopping we dragged home a Speed Queen washer (in the back of the Volvo wagon). Basic top loader, stainless tub, no need to use special high efficient detergent. USA made (Wisconsin) with all metal gear train and basic mechanical timer. Not super quiet, not energy efficient, but on weekly laundry day it runs half a dozen huge loads in a row. It DOES wash faster and with less water than the Maytag and does a great job. When the Maytag gas drier gives up, hopefully I can get the matching Speed Queen.
Note that Speed Queen is made by Alliance Laundry Systems and is the consumer version of their commercial units. They are also sold under the Crosley and Huebsch names.
