If you want to get a bike to save money, then I think you should take a close look at why you're doing it.
It can save you money, but it's not likely to get you ahead any time soon, if ever.
I ride a '94 R1100RS BMW. Gas mileage is in the mid-40s. Not a good bike to save money with. Tires are expensive. Gear is expensive (Yes, buy good gear). Insurance and registration isn't free. Your commute will change, as kaslop says. It's not okay to hop on a bike and then wake up. Going to the grocery store after work is totally doable, but you have to think the day through if you're on a bike.
Take the safety course.
If you get a bike, get it for the right reason and don't take it lightly.
All the best,
~Peter
P.S. Probably will be selling my bike soon. I just don't ride it enough to justify owning it.
