We're older than you, just turned 60, and we talk about what's next. We're eligible for pensions (60% of income) now and, at 62, pension + soc sec = current wage, so we can retire in two years without touching our savings or investments. It then becomes a matter of working only for love, because it sure wouldn't be for money.
Our jobs afford us lots of flexibility; we both like what we do; we have plenty of money to travel 2 or 3 nice trips a year (which we already do) but not enough to travel full time. The spousal unit keeps talking about retiring, and I keep asking "Why?" "What is it you want to do? Or to escape from?" So far, she hasn't come up with an answer.
I've watched our parents grow old (three alive (88, 90, and 94), the fourth having died at 92) doing nothing, and I know that's not for me. I have an older brother who become a free-lance financial planner and another who leads 3-4 opera tours to Europe every year; that's not for me, either, but at least it's something.
It's hard to see down that road, no matter how hard we try. I've pretty much decided that as long as I love this work and as long as I can still relate to the college freshmen in my courses each fall, and as long as I cannot see something I would rather do, then I see no reason to change.
So that's not a real answer, is it. But it's where I'm at today, a few weeks past 60. Follow my heart, and my heart says to stay here with these young minds I so thoroughly enjoy.
