The issue is really pursuit and maintenance of quality of life[QOL]. You go after things that you want to do, but age is reducing the window of activities that are possible or sustainable. So you start looking at spending more time maintaining your health and vitality, like a old Saab. Preventative medicine and diet are prime issues. Preventative medicine really does include diet/supplements. Things that you can do include hormone restoration. Declining hormone levels weaken multiple systems in the body, including mental functioning; mood changes, depression, loss of libido, low energy are common results. Low testosterone also increases LDL and promotes endothelial dysfunction [heart disease], insulin resistance [leads to diabetes], loss of muscle mass, central obesity.
Many of the things that we pass off as "just getting older" are really caused by hormone declines and imbalances; which can be quite reversible.
Statin drugs induce CoQ10 deficiencies. CoQ10 is mission critical for mitochondrial function; which creates the energy that cells need to function. Statin drugs can lead to a persistent cough, which is from a mechanical point of view, a case of drug induced congestive heart failure [reversible with CoQ10].
Thyroid: Thyroid function can be diminished for several reasons. But one common problem is totally avoidable. Many are using sea salt instead of iodized salt. This leads to iodine deficiency that can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Doctors direct those with high blood pressure to stop using salt. Iodine deficiency is then very likely unless one obtains iodine via vitamins or a few other sources. Doctors put patients into iodine deficiency all of the time and seem to be clueless about what that does.
You need to manage your own health care. Doctors mostly centered on disease management. If you do not have medical problem, they cannot help you.
So you can see where my QOL considerations have taken me. I spend a large amount of time helping a large internet community with these things. I have one doctor who was inspired by my protocols and stickies who changed his medical practice to be HRT and preventative.
