I dunno. I think you are looking at it too simplistically + pessimistically. I think it would have been a different story if the NG9-5 were instead the NGNG9-3. Fundamentally, few Saab enthusiasts are going to jump on a car that big + luxury-oriented. Many here have a North American standpoint, and sure US sales are important, but values are different elsewhere in the world.
GM massively diluted the brand equity, in spite of the Trolls' efforts to thwart that. Though the distinction between a c900 and a malibu is more than a 9-3ss and a malibu, enthusiasts still see the difference... as would others if they took a Saab out for a spin... just not on the radar for many.
I think if a new owner with adequate capitalization, a good business plan, and a good reputation/dealer network (eg BMW) buys Saab + produces a new NGNG9-3/900, in the spirit of an SPG (like that grainy image we saw a while back)... buyers are going to come out of the woodwork... if Youngman pilfers the brand to build land yachts for China, well, it will be sad + you will be right...
Again, this is easy for me to say, as I wouldn't pay $50k for a NG9-5 or CV either, not because I don't think they're worth that vs the competition (or even because neither meet my needs), but because I wouldn't buy *any* new car. I don't feel *any* new car (even the cheap ones) is worth *anywhere* near the asking price to me. I have better ways to use my money than on something that loses value so fast! I buy used cars + let someone else pay the massive depreciation up front. That said, I can't find another manufacturer who I like half as much. If I had no choice but to buy new, I'd pay those figures for Saabs vs Toyota prices for Toyotas or Hyundai prices for Hyundais or BMW prices for BMW's... Remember, the BMW's and Audis are *more* expensive than the Saab list prices, and I like them less! I suspect many here share my viewpoint. Most of the rest left to buy bloody Kias already...
I do agree that writing a letter to the president is grasping at straws, as an understatement... to the union: Good luck with that!
