What Saab needs is to build cars that are so compelling people will stand in line to pay full list price for them. The latest 9-3, as an example, is a perfectly nice car with many virtues, but image-wise it's a 3 series/A4 wannabe. People don't stand in line to buy wannabes. Two good examples of how they should be thinking are the Mini Cooper and the Jeep Wrangler--these cars have phenomenal resale value and never languish on dealer lots. So what is it people like so much about these cars? Certainly the nostalgia thing is part of it but I think the real appeal is that there's just plain nothing else like them, they are TOTALLY UNIQUE. Think back to the car Saab built that has that kind of DNA--the C900. It's been nearly twenty years since they built one and they still resonate with people. And Saab is the only company in the world that can capitalize on that. Saab has been building perfectly nice cars for the last twenty years, but these days perfectly nice cars are a dime a dozen. What they need is perfectly unique cars that you can't buy anywhere else.
