If you want a new car with a smaller turbocharged engine that is new, you're looking at an Audi A4, new BMW 328i with the 2 liter turbo 4 or Buick Regal Turbo (same engine as the Saab 9-3), in my opinion. Low torque curves, good passing power on the highway.
I have a '10 335d now parked next to my Saabs. It is auto only, but is a torque monster, and gives you the sensation of power that few sedans, outside of the high performance V8 powered ones can give. It also gets 36-38mpg on the highway too, which is fantastic. BMW stopped bringing them in 2011, but there are a few new ones still sitting on lots. If you can forego the manual transmission, it is an absolutely awesome car!
