I don't think you can get a stick shift, but you would be surprised at the performance of the new Kia Optima SX (and the shiftable automatic is very smooth in either mode). We had an '02 9-5 Linear, which we passed along at 180,000 a couple of years ago, and the Kia has more than a bit of Saab-ness to it. Nice road feel though the handling isn't quite as crisp, lacking the Saab understeer; the 2.0 turbo does 0-60 in the neighborhood of 6 seconds (I've read 5.8, 6.1, etc.) without as much turbo lag as the 9-5 had.
Yeah, I know, it's a Kia, but you have to give it a chance to appreciate it. Kia hired Peter Schreyer away from Audi to do the design, and it's a very slick, solidly built, comfortable touring car with a bit of a kick. Only the EX and SX models have the turbo, and the SX has a tauter suspension. Built in the USA; comparable space to an old 9-5.
Will it last 180,000 miles? I don't know that it will, but then again, I don't know that it won't. But I shopped cars for over a year before I sat down in one of these new Optimas, and it sold itself in a big hurry. The Sonata has the same bones, but to my eye, the Optima is way more attractive.
