many cars are designed to be marketed with a short term/superficial mindset because that is where the money is:

- safety is about getting 5 stars in one or 2 government crash tests. who cares if it is actually safe.

- for the lease owner: who cares about whether or not the car will rust in 5 or 6 years when you trade it in every 3 or 4. Ever seen a 10 year old Ford Focus? Mazda 3? Hyundai/Kia?

It costs more to build with the solidity we are used to in our Saabs.

I don't understand why so many are looking to other car brands right now. Unless your Saab is really old or not well maintained, why not just keep driving it? That's what we're doing... we have 3 + I can't find another car I like as much...
