A6 has been OK so far, with exception of Thermostat Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 30 May 2012 08:32:26 In Reply to: Has your A6 really been that bad to turn you off Audi 2, Daniel, Tue, 29 May 2012 19:48:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Unfortunately, replacing the thermostat requires a timing belt job, which at most places is $1500+. This car now has about 60,000 miles (a 2001 model!), so it's in a spot where it should be OK for a few years. After that, experience with my previous A4 gives me a very good idea of what to expect ($$$), but this car is even more complex, with variable engine valve timing controlled by little cam chain tensioners that are known to leak or wear out, more electronics to break (the radio is already starting to flake out), SRS light for REAR airbags, etc. Newer Audis are even more complex than this one.
My brother has a BMW and has electronics issues that can only be repaired at a dealer, as software needs to be married to the car. Meanwhile the ABS controller is limiting power from the engine because it's unhappy (no real fault); the dealer's suggested repair is a $1300 part with $350 to install, and no guarantee that this will fix the issue!
Most current European cars come loaded with lots of complex electronics, and my experience with these parts has not been very encouraging.
