IMHO Maytag is not the same company since it was acquired by Whirlpool. Actually, Whirlpools are not as good as they once were either. We have a lake house and we still use my great grandmothers Maytag Washer. They definately don't build them like that. The neptune front load washers had a lot of issues. Infact, most font loaders do. I personally have a front load Asko and love it. I suspect that you would want to replace them as a pair. If you are just replacing the dryer I would pick Frigidaire which is owned by Electrolux and also Swedish. I wouldn't go with just an Asko Dryer. Miele is also a great company they are still a privately held family company. Their products were a little more expensive, but I have heard they are great units. Beyond that I would suggest Bosch. Now if you want form over function buy an LG. LG used to be Goldstar. They are Korean and look great. I actually buy broken units off craigslist and use them in my rental properties because people love the way they look. Having repaired them I can tell you they are not well built. But the parts are easy to get. So, do what you have to do. I would look on craislist at broken units. Not to buy but maybe an indication of what units not to buy. I have seen patterns of failures of brands. Good Luck!
