Against our son's advice about poor reliability in the high end FL seasonal rental market, we ended up with GE top load washer and gas dryer per Consumers list of not bad machines. The washer construction is a change from our previous Maytags. It has no transmission, just a reversible servo motor and belt for the short agitator and drum spin. The motor reverses direction repeatedly for the agitator action and sounds like a turbine winding up for spin. It uses a separate motor for the pump, and a magnetic clutch to engage the drum for spin. Kind of simple. On the net people love them or hate them, the later because short agitator makes it easy to overload. Works OK for us.
Had the dryer a couple weeks when it started sounding like a semi with bad brakes going down an infinite hill. Took a factory service tech to replace the rear bushing with proper quality one. The original bushing looked like a cost reduction project gone wrong. Dryer works Ok also.
Since Maytags are so so anymore, we figure it is acceptable to buy above average replacements every so often.
