People have less money to spend, seats aren't cheap, and watching a bunch of fat NASCAR sleds turn left can get kinda old after a few laps.
IMHO, except for the sensory part-- the noise and smells of being there-- most auto racing is much better on TV because you get all the different points of view from in-car cams and you actually see more of the race. I only watch F1 and while I like being at a race, the TV version really shows a lot more of what's going on.
As for the NASCAR sleds doing 150 in the corners, compare it to Indy cars: they go through the corners faster than the NASCAR sleds go down the straights.
