About 10 to 15 years ago or so, a friend of mine took a tour of a brand spanking new factory someplace in Western Connecticut that was intended to make Black and Decker branded brass door hinges. But the factory never opened since B&D could import Chinese made hinges for a small fraction of the cost to make them here. I presume the machinery was removed and sold off or transported to China.
In Newark, NJ, you can still buy one liter bottles of imported water from Portugal cheaper than a similarly sized bottle of Poland Spring from Maine. Sad. It would appear that our distribution system is much too efficient.
