Just went through this with Sandy. Our 16 year old Generac 5500W broke the second day..Can't say why but it was very old. Not that we could have gotten gasoline for it..not a station was open.
We went with the Sportsman 7000 LPG (propane) from gas generators dottt com. (Buffalo tools). I recommend them highly because they were able to ship us a unit and we received it while still without power (13 days).
Unit is not quieter but it is a simpler unit and powered everything. Seemed more efficient also than old gasoline one.. (used 1 barbecue tank over about 10-11 hours).
If buying gasoline our friends loaned us a Champion 6500w/8250surge unit that had a remote start and was very very nice (but heavy). A bit quieter
as far as generators go.
