There are times when splitting an order because one part is backordered is really important, other times when it's OK to just wait and save on shipping.
In may case, there are 4 Saabs in the yard, so I will order stuff for more than one car at a time, of for one car needing multiple repairs. So if not all the parts come at once it's usually OK as I can get at least some of the work done. Knowing that the missing parts will be arriving lets me plan for doing the work requiring that part. Since the work all gets done on weekends, this means less lost time and gets work done sooner.
If you are able to set up orders this way I think it would be excellent. People can choose what option works for them. Having this option when placing an order for a harder-to-find part would be great. The difficulty might be for those parts that are on 5-7 day availability. That can mean a real delay in getting the part in and then shipped to the customer, especially if they are on the left coast. But if people know up front they can decide.
