not cars per se.
1. The roads were less crowded.
2. Less costumed revenue patrols.
3. The average wage could buy far more gallons of gas, wage was around $8k/yr whereas gas was 25cents a gallon, so 32,000 gallons before income and payroll taxes. Today, wages are around $40k/yr, but gas is near $4, so only 10,000 gallons in a year's average wage, and typical income and payroll taxes for the average family are higher too compared to the Good Old Days. The average American family real income has dropped by more than a half in the past 40 years. Pinching gas miles does not make for fun driving.
