Most mass produced cars from the 30's were like that: very easy to maintain and repair. There are videos online where you can see Jeep CJ's being assembled with common hand tools in a matter of minutes!
The German failure with the volkswagen (the car name, not just the company name) was in cost control: the Gauleiters (party leaders) assigned to run the production facility could never get the cost down to a level where average consumers could afford it despite ready Ford and GM examples in the US, so the Autobahn was left empty (eventually having to allow bicycle traffic before the Allies took over the roads for invading Germany). Not a single production volkswagen was delivered to the German consumer before the end of the war; the entire production became Kublewagens (military staff cars), and in that role (and in just about any other role), it was decidedly inferior to the American Jeep CJ.
After WWII, VW Bug sold well around the world because:
1. all the Gauleiters party appointees feeding off the factories were gone;
2. German labor became ridiculously cheap due to massive currency depreciation after they lost the war;
3. Germans had to eat, as there wasn't/isn't enough farm land in Germany to feed the entire population, so they had to export something anything in order to buy food from the outside world.
