The '70 was the handler but the '68 had a better motor (from a '71). The '68 would do a little over 100 mph with some aero aids.
The abilities of those old Bugs was pretty amazing, considering they were basically 1940s technology. Loved the simplicity. You could fix just about anything on them with basic tools, as long as you had the VW required bits: 10 and 13 mm wrenches, vise grips and a hammer. ;o)
There's a lot to be said for that! I once rebuilt an engine in my college dorm. Great cars.
