Do you have room for a double gang box? If so, you really don't need to rip into the wall. You will need to buy a "Old Work" style double gang box (one that secures to the drywall rather than the studs), use creative demolition to remove the old box without doing any damage (maybe a hack saw to cut the old box straps/nails), then carefully cut a wider opening in the drywall to accept the old work box, install the new swithches and cover plate.
It sounds as if you have a "Duplex Devices" switch pack. Two switches that occupy a single gang box and use a standard receptacle plate as the cover plate. Is this correct?
Installing a old work box is really not difficult. Just be careful with the demo so as to not damage adjoinng finish surfaces, and cut the wider opening a little tight so the box is a push fit not a fall-in fit.
