I agree with the others that you should try for a double gang box (in the worst case, if the fill is excessive swap in a deeper single box, but then you are still stuck with finding a dual switch pilot light)...
the best bet is to (after killing the power to the circuits in question, obviously) pull the existing switches and probe around: poke a wire through the holes in the box and measure how far you've got on each side... Most likely the current box is on a stud (you can estimate this pretty easily: 2 studs + door casing = about 4"), but maybe you will get lucky...
If your house is plaster, the trick I use is to gently drill a series of holes through just the plaster with a fine masonry bit... basically make a dotted line where the box edge will be... it is then much easier to remove the unwanted plaster without damaging the finish outside of where the cover plate will reside. once the plaster is gone you can more gently saw the lathe so it doesn't all fall apart (I often try to reinforce it from the back first). It amazes me how many electricians just go in there with a recip or jig saw and shake the whole wall apart - leaving the damage to the next guy to fix (which is way more work than doing it right)... idiots...
