You can buy a single and a double Old Work boxes Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 17:37:15 In Reply to: Re: Do you have room for a double gang box?, Randy Thatcher [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 27 Nov 2012 16:51:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Remove the current box, carefully probe inside the wall cavity to determine available space, install the double box if space permits, or install the single box to replace existing if no space and go back to drawing board.
Since the house was built in 1941 there is a chance the wall boxes are screwed to the wooden lath. This would make the retrofit work much easier. Or the Builder may have used plaster board like my parent's 1950 home.
Depending on how much additional space you need you may be able to chisel away a half inch or so of the wall stud(s) to fit a double wide box. Allied Moulded Product's old work double gang boxes are 4-1/8 inches wide. For really tight spaces you will need a box with ears, and a pair of "Eazy Ins". Easy Ins are thin metal strips which loosely resemble a capital F letter. Push the box into the wall opening until the ears on the box are tight with the plaster, then slip and wiggle the Eazy Ins between the side of the box and the wall with the parallel legs pointing outward into the room, one on each side. The final step is to bend the thin metal legs inward into the box.
On the attached link these are called Side Brackets (?!)
The box ears prevent the box from falling into the wall, the bent over legs prevent it from falling out of the wall. Will work fine for switches but I do not recommend using Eazy Ins on a box to house receptacles.
Remember the cover plate will be slightly wider and that will need to fit between the door casing and the adjoining wall too. Although some wall plates are designed so that the outer edges can be trimmed away to fit tight spaces.
I checked into Despard style devices due to their small size but those can only be stacked three high in a single box and you will need four devices, two switches and two pilot lights.
