You are correct, as no private company has ever gone under.
Yes we can't "afford" it because we keep cutting taxes, and that has worked oh so well. So we should do what Greece did and go austerity, because that is working so well too.
There are always "shortages" of private investment dollars for early stage research as it usually takes a long time to bring a product to market, and the amount of private dollars willing to wait around is not large, especially when the researcher is honest about how long the development will take.
Even that report that came out that said the US would be out producing Saudi Arabia and said the US could be oil independent pointed out two facts that most seem to ignore. The first is 45% of the way to energy independence was based on conservation. The second, is that even if the US didn't import oil, prices still would remain high and likely go up as oil is purchased on a global market, and the global market is still growing. Simple economics or supplementary products, if one goes up buy a different one that gives the same benefit. Plus it does not help that most of the undeveloped oil in the US is the expensive to reach stuff such as deep water and oil shale, etc, which only makes sense to develop at high oil prices.
