Dead Saab, replacement advice?

My daughter's '96 9000 took a bullet for her on Wednesday night and is totalled at 173K miles, so we're looking for a new used car for her. Having a 9K myself, I know there is no real replacement for a 9000 (except maybe an Audi A7) and good ones are very hard to find, so we're thinking of something a bit more ordinary. We have a few things in mind and would love the input of the Saabnet Brain Trust
She wants a hatchback, 4 cylinders, decent durability. And the budget dictates that it be 8-10 years old. Here's what we're thinking as possibles:
A Subie wagon> Impreza, Forester or Outback/Legacy would all be OK. I know there are head gasket issues with the 2.5 liter engine, but haven't researched beyond that. These things are everywhere here in New England and do hold up pretty well. She likes the idea of a Subie (she does a ton of outdoor stuff where it's capabilities have some appeal.
A Toyota Matrix. Boring and practical but would be good for her. Probably pretty durable given that it's basically a Corolla wagon.
VW Golf. Not sure. I hear too much about electrical issues that are expensive to diagnose and fix.
And of course a OG9-3 is an option. My other daughter has one ('99 SE , 168K). The PO maintained that car really well and in the 3+ years we've had it hasn't needed much so I have no sense of what these are really like. It's kinda bland IMHO. Just a car. But I do like the idea of being able to come here for help and advice.
What else should we consider? Reliability, durability, fuel economy are important. So are repair costs.
TIA, guys.
