og9-3 or late model NG900 is not bad either... the 9-5 is a very safe car and the lpts are not in huge demand... examples are available very cheaply such that with care, and a little diy work, they can be very cost effective. especially where you know saabs.
Subarus have a cult following, but I've been pretty underwhelmed with the ones I've driven. More expensive to insure also. The newer Foresters have atrocious handling (at least compared to the worst modern Saabs in that regard) and visibility is not great either. Impreza might be of interest for her though. I think the cult following makes the owners (lemmings?) ignore the issues - most of my friends are subie drivers, and when the tranny goes or whatnot, they just buy another without test driving anything else... when we looked used, an impreza with cloth seats and identical miles/condition cost as much or more as a 9-5 or 9-3ss... and Saabs have mostly dropped in value since!
obviously there are downsides to buying a used saab now, but I bet you are more than up for the challenge (given your knowledge, collection of saabs, and great contributions to this bb)...
good luck in your search!
