Glad your daughter's ok, that's obviously the most important thing. I wouldn't rule out another 9k, if you found a good one, assuming she's on board with the idea. I think all your ideas are worthwhile candidates, though I'd honestly stay away from Audis, simply because of the complexity of maintaining them. Even paying indy labor rates, maintaining them can be very expensive, because being easy to work on does not appear to ever have been part of anybody's design brief at Audi. I believe on the A4 it's necessary to remove the front bumper and intercooler to get at the starter. Even if you're diy-ing, you would probably prefer not spend an entire weekend doing what should only take Saturday morning. If you are going back 7-8 years, I'd strongly suggest going south from NH to buy a car. Even southern New England or NJ cars will have considerably less winter wear and tear than NH cars. IIRC, you bought your 9k in NJ, so you're probably already aware of this. From what I know, Subaru has not yet come up with a true solution to their headgasket issues, they certainly had not 7-8 years ago. The Legacy based outback is by far the best built car Subaru makes, and is way more desirable than any Impreza or Forester (SP?). It will likely stand up better in an accident, too. That is one thing that the VW will definitely have in it's favor, too. Like Audis, some VW's will run forever without anything beside routine maintenance, others will get you in the gold customer club at the parts store/indy shop. No real way to know for sure which you're getting. Matrix is a decent car, but may not be big enough for the gear she's used to carrying in a 9000. A 9-3 hatch or 9-3 wagon will be acceptably close to a 9000. 9-5 wagons can be dirt cheap too, or maybe she should take your wife's car, and your wife get the new car? ;)
