It's interesting the input here on Subies. Pretty much reflects my basic impressions of them. They sure seem overpriced for what you get in the used market, and while they seem to hold up fairly well, they aren't as robust overall as a Saab. And the fuel economy on them bites. The Impreza wagon or the Forester are OK, but are really econboxes and I'd like something more around her for safety. Plus I'd have to climb the repair learning curve and the Subie forums are nowhere near as good as Saabnet.
She's been in Subies a bunch but never driven one. In fact, she's mostly driven Saabs for the past 8 years since she learned to drive. She doesn't really get it that they are more special than they appear. The first time she goes to pass someone in a normally aspirated car would be a surprise.
She wants a hatchback, so I'm liking the OG 9-3 or another 9K. A 9-5 would be OK, but I don't think she'd want a wagon (my wife has one, so it'd mean she'd be in a "mom car"). She drove her sister's OG 9-3 and wasn't thrilled, but coming out of a 9K the 9-3 is a very different beast, so it takes getting used to.
Part of this is money. I'll buy it but she has to pay me back, so it has to be something that she can afford to make a regular payment on as she's saving for grad school. In a perfect world I'd get something newer for my wife or me and she could take my 9K or the wagon, but that's not in the cards at the moment.
But the good thing is that used Saabs are a great value, especially when you compare pricing to other used cars. And since parts are available, a Saab sure makes sense!
