are kind of a contradiction--you see them with 300K miles all the time and yet they seem to have a lot of problems (and they are gas hogs). They have a lot more engine problems than just head gaskets--piston slap and issues with the #3 cylinder are two. My Subaru mechanic friend say you have to mill the engine deck when you do a head gasket if you want it to last, which means pulling the engine ($3000). They also have "Japanese car syndrome" ie. people think because they are Japanese you don't have to maintain them and don't. Finally the good resale value makes older ones rather pricey--very little bang for the buck at the "cash car" stage. VWs can be really good or really bad and you never know which--Audi-esk parts/repair prices don't help. When it comes to bang for the buck there is simply no better car than an older Saab and the NG900/OG9-3 are the best of the best. My '98 900SE was the most reliable Saab I've ever owned--my mechanic thought I was mad at him. In the price range you're looking it usually comes down to cars of opportunity--you buy the best you can find so I guess it would ultimately boil down to the best Saab you run across. A case could be made for leasing a new basic car like a Ford Fiesta or Focus. A grand or two down, $150 a month and she could have no worries/clear sailing for three years. Plus she could hang onto some of the cash she would have spent since I'm assuming she's spending more than $2000 for a car.
