and if you are going to get a dog with known lineage talk with owners of it's related. I believe lots of Terriers were bred to be hunter/killers, and it can be very different for dogs of same breed who come from different lines. Some can be very sweet with other animals where others may still hold with what the breed was developed to do. Some breeds can be known to be cat-small animal aggressive.
How they are introduced is important - new animal kept in a restricted area with closed door initially, so the resident animals get to know by sounds and smell that there is a new animal in residence. For second stage I have used a frame of 2x2 with 1/2" hardware cloth made to fit a door opening to allow see-smell-no touch. Puppies often develop with other animals as 'part of the pack' regardless of breed & species.
A cat that is very nervous with new dog can often be helped by having a cat escape at the other end of the room - small opening between rooms - cat door. Also having secure and comfortable places that the dog cannot reach - shelves - tall furniture with tops - etc. can make cats much more secure. I lived with seven cats and five dogs in the same house at one time. The house has a 'cat hatch' from upper level with steps and ramps to lower level so cats don't have to get chased up/down the stairs if they don't want to. If dogs don't attack cats, cats can usually have the upper hand with claw-paw slaps.
I'm currently two dogs and two cats in a very comfortable relationship
