Reading all of these tales of woe and I'm feeling weird about my Saab.
Before I started purchasing Saabs in 1997, I owned two Chevies (a 78 Caprice that my dad gave me in '85 and a '90 Beretta I bought new). Those cars drove like crap, but they never broke down and never needed any expensive repairs. I milked 135K on the Caprice before the steering felt odd enough that I didn't trust it any longer, and the replacement Beretta went 7 years and 230K miles without anything breaking - just replaced batteries, tires and oil changes. My '97 900S was similarly cheap to maintain - the only thing failing was the belt/idler pully - and I milked about 130K out of that before the frame corroded the car into oblivion.
But, for my 03 9-3, I seriously drop about $2K+ a year just to keep it running. But since it only failed once on the road (due to the tranny contamination - which wasn't really the car's fault, but an assembly issue), I must say it is a very reliable car. Looks cool too - even after 10 years.
