In my neck of the woods, it is pretty common to have exactly 0 cars for sale within 150 miles of me which are even remotely similar (Make, Model, generation, body style) to my Saab, or any of the cars I've actually owned. (A quick search on Autotrader shows 39 Saabs for sale within 200 miles. There is one 9-5 wagon, and it is an arc. Mine is an Aero. No dice, kind insurance company! Oh, and there are zero C900s, not to mention SPGs.)
When the insurance company provides me with a replacement value, the first thing I would do is ask for the list of cars they used to determine that value. I agree with you that they play games to lower the payout. I hate that. (The whole premise of insurance is a conflict of interest, IMHO. I pay them to cover my losses, but it is in their best interest to compensate me with the lowest possible payout.)
In my case, I received a letter stating that after "finding comparable cars in your area, we've determined that your car is worth $2400." I had been searching for weeks for cars and there were exactly zero cars within 150 miles that were even the same make, model, and generation. Of course, their letter was boiler plate, and they didn't provide me with a list of cars which they used to determine the value of mine. I provided them with a list, and eventually doubled the payout. I would even be tempted to say that I would need an infinite amount of money to replace my car within 150 miles, so if they didn't agree to widening their search, I'd be glad to settle for, say, $1,000,000 ;o)
My first reaction to a company treating me like I'm ignorant is to say, "Alright, you go and actually buy that car which you think is comparable to mine for $2400, since I can't find it. The reason I can't find it is because it doesn't exist. Thanks for playing, now provide me with the product I've been paying for (fair replacement value) over the last several years, but which you are trying to avoid giving to me."
As one who drives cars which are not very common, I realize that I am not a typical insured driver. If I drove a Camry, then there's dozens of cars to chose from if I need to replace it. That is the kind of situation the insurance companies are used to dealing with, and I'll bet that those values are more accurate than valuing a uniquely well-kept, clean, and increasingly rare car.
Cheers,
~Peter
