Yes, this is a special house! But as any owner of an old house knows, "special" and "very old" implies "significant maintenance requirements".
Re the ice and water shield, we doubled the original coverage when the new roof was installed and installed new flashing in the valleys and near chimneys - perhaps should have used more shield, but this is the first time in a dozen winters that this has been an issue. My neighbor's mirror-image twin house (seen at the far right corner of the photo, there is a gap of about four feet between them) does have heat cables, never thought that I needed them before this brutal winter.
There seem to be adequate volume gutters and downspouts during summer rainstorms, and yes there are drains for both the upper roof and the flat porch roof off to the left of the photo, as well as to the right. The center of the upper roof has a downspout that drains off to the right via a long run - currently frozen solid.
The ridge vents were added 18 months ago at the roofer's recommendation. I don't see any soffit intake vents, but that does not mean that the soffits are air tight at this point - repair is on my "to do" list. When we bought the house we blew in a thick layer of fiberglass in the attic out to the soffits, perhaps I need to cut some vents - probably the same time that I add some outlets up there for heater cables. I already installed a dedicated circuit up to the attic for an attic fan, will use the same one for heater cables in the winter. Is a "Max Air" an attic fan?
Off to a distant Home Depot to buy one of the few remaining snow rakes - hope that I can reach what I need to with "only" 21 feet of length.
