Yes, imho, blown in cellulose works much better in old homes than expanding foam. It doesn't need perfect vapour barriers, but adequate attic ventilation is still required (for the roof). Generally fibreglass is one of the worst options in an old home in a cold climate: requires a good vapour barrier (best option in an old home is vapour barrier paint) or moisture condenses in it and causes rot. Also it rarely gets the R value advertised because it is so open - especially in an attic with nothing covering it. Expanding foam lets you do a "hot roof" (no ventilation), but it can out-gas and deteriorate, and it's pretty expensive if you want a decent R value. And as you say, because it is a perfect vapour barrier, you need to do an HRV, and possibly add ductwork (not all old houses have that already) to maintain air quality... unless you like mushrooms!
