Yes, I know the physics. I wasn't talking the speed to get the best mpg… but the 'sweet spot' between 'high' speed & 'high' mpg.
Ours doesn't have a 'trip' computer so I can't easily monitor it, even if just relatively if not absolute. However, my understanding is in 5th gear the speed / rpms at which the torque converter will remain in lock up just about 100% of the time while cruising in normal conditions (like slight hills or going over overpasses) is about 70mph, if not a bit faster.
Couple of times on family summer trips when I filled shortly before getting on the interstate & again shortly after getting off, with setting the cruise at 73 mph (speed limit was 65), 5 people with luggage, (ok, 3 were small kids… but with all the kid gear the third row was stowed & the back was packed), A/C going & the second on going at times, and considering the the EPA Highway rating is 25… I wasn't complaining when I'd calculate it out at about 24 mpg.
I'm not saying it won't get better mileage at lower speeds… but that would mean a speed low enough it wouldn't be in 5th. At that speed I wouldn't be taking the interstate and then there goes both speed & mpg improvement.
