CPS = Crank Position Sensor? The 1994+ cars seem to have a much more reliable CPS than the older cars (engine reconfigured that year), so you may be OK leaving the old one in there. Sounds like you may need to drill out the old bolt and retap the hole if you want to replace it - ugh!
In any case, it sounds like you did the right preemptive stuff, hope that your wife appreciates it. Also note that newer cars can leave you stranded as well.
