I've got the book from the Royal Swedish Academy about those years. Carbon monoxide poisoning happened everyday and the tars were pretty nasty. They scrapped the units as soon as petroleum came back.
That said you might check out Wayne's site driveonwood.com. He has over 200k miles on his converted Dodge pickups and seems to have refined things somewhat. It's really only of interest to fringe tinkerers in areas with available wood. It could be considered carbon neutral if the biomass used would just decompose on the ground.
