I think a Mini is a pretty darn cool looking car for what it is, and it even fits tall people well. Would it work for me. No. That's ok, though, it works for lots of other people and I sure as heck wouldn't want them to morph it into a large sedan or SUV. Who would have thought anyone would buy a Smart car (I call them Dumb Cars), especially in north america... but they've done ok!
I don't know how well Porsche Panamera sells, or Tesla S, but... those are roughly the same shape as a 9000: big hatch... but at a much higher price. Absence/shortage of a type means there is a market niche. It is a matter of exploiting it properly. That said, many brands are reintroducing this shape eg the 3 and 4 series GT's, Audi also, but none are quite what SAAB had.
While it is true the 9-3ss sold very well (for a SAAB) initially - imho, it sold to different buyers than 99/c900/9000/og9-3... it targeted a more mainstream value oriented luxury customer, and that imho was a huge tactical error pushed by GM. Mind you, I don't think GM had in mind quite the level of redesign that SAAB did on those cars either!
SAAB was always great because it was polarizing and innovative. The 9-3ss might be a great car, but it was not at all polarizing and not particularly innovative either.
