It wasn't solely the fact they were sedans and yes there were a lot of factors. But it was basically the fact it was a middle or the road, me too, GM think product. So the 9-3 was almost as good as a 3 series, at a bargain price but with a sketchy dealer network, and much worse resale. Who would have guessed people wouldn't beat a path to their door for that? Even back in the day Saabs (I sold C900s new in the '80s) were the antithesis of the Germans. They did everything different, they were unique. They didn't sell tons of them but they did get pretty close to sticker price and we sold everyone we got. Building a car that's better than a 3 series is a tall order, and unless you can you're doomed to be an also ran. Saab was a small company with limited resources so the best plan might have been to "hit'em where they ain't."
