the pricier models have a floating-lock fit that gives excellent ventilation and a easy-to-adjust fit (Giro Roclock, Specialized Mindset, etc.--- this refers to the helmet band that goes around the head, not just the strap clasp). And they weigh a lot less, 200 g vs >400g for a cheaper model. These things make a huge difference on long rides in hot weather. But if you're just doing short 30 min commutes around town it won't matter. And yes, they all have to meet the same basic standard for impact. All of the major helmet models are available in either a swoopy-racer style, or a more conservative just-a-helmet look.
