I'm more of a mountain biker, so I've had my fair share of crashes, but I can only think of one where I bonked my head and it was pretty light. No damage to the helmet really even. I've probably just been lucky!
Bike lanes can be dangerous particularly at intersections with roads. Separate bike paths through parklands less so, but still, dogs on thin leashes, fast or erratic other riders etc, can present hazards. That said, for the most part, lower speed cycling on bike paths is pretty safe. Safer than sitting on the couch and watching TV imho!
I wear a helmet out of habit though. It has become a fad to not wear one, and ride down busy streets drinking a starbucks and texting on one's iphone. I call it hipster-darwinism. It's kind of like the SUV driving soccer mom on the cell phone but without all the metallic padding.
Adam's comments are interesting to me because many here speak of the Bike Utopia that is Copenhagen... which does seem quite nice, but at the same time, I can imagine that nothing is perfect. Still, I like that we are seeing improvements in bike infrastructure.
Helmet or no helmet, roads are not safe. In the last year a local highly experienced cyclist was driven over by a truck and killed. His helmet did not save him. Another non-helmet wearing rider also killed on the same road. Bike with care!
