I was just in Belgium, borrowed a bike from my hotel and rode around Antwerp at night. No helmet, and day or night I only recall seeing a couple of people with helmets--riding on city bikes. The folks on modern road bikes, all clad in spandex, all wore helmets.
However, at home I always ride with a helmet (I do 60 to 100 miles a week, rural rides), and I ski with one, too. I will keep that up, but I don't really know the difference between the name brand ones from Giro, Bontrager, Specialized, etc., and the Bell or Schwinn lids at Wally World. I suspect the fancy ones are a tad lighter, but are probably pretty much the same under their mylar skins.
There have been articles about this in Bicycling magazine, but no really clear reason to buy a big brand name.
But this is my head, and protection is a good thing. I look at the 6D and think it's fine, especially for MTB, but I it makes me think of the Snell approved hard hat I wear on track days. haha.
